Boxing Day Walk

Boxing Day Walk

Puddle splattered track
Stretching to meet an endless
Azure expanse of sky which in turn
Arcs to kiss the field-flecked earth skin

I breathe in the vast bright inspiration
Of this wide, light vista
My urban charred lungs unfolding
In spirit-soaring freedom from concrete clutter

The spaciousness fills my senses
Only sparse bird call claims my listening
Alongside the rustle of foliage and
Scorched crackle of parched white bark

Whiskery wisps whisper secrets
To winter twisted twigs
Whilst morning sunlight, snared on brambles
Lies cupped in upturned leaf faces

The track trails away
Along hedge browed fields
As I turn towards the corner cottage
Taking what I can of this freshness with me

#APoemADay – Day 30 – Completion - Ouroboros

#APoemADay – Day 30 – Completion - Ouroboros

And so the arc of one month
Touches to reach the edge of another
And the tail of this year will soon
Be swallowed by the mouth of another
And this day is devoured by the dark night
Until dawn gives radiant rise to another

Always ending, always beginning
The circles of time meeting one another
Through today, tomorrow and yesterday
Always turning, always spinning
The movement of one moment to another
Each word marking out time on the page
Dissolving into silence in search of another.

Thank you for reading and being part of my #APoemADay Challenge for November

#APoemADay Day 29 – Love on the Radar

#APoemADay Day 29 – Love on the Radar

Love on the radar
Emanations of splendour
Turn in and tune in
To the soul song within
To experience alleviation
Of life’s altercations
With sweet succour
Of joyful life-nectar

#APoemADay Day 28 - Willow

#APoemADay Day 28 - Willow

Weeping willow
Hold me in your falling leafy limbs
Help me grow from my grief
Teach me your still silent wisdom

These tears spring from gnarled roots
Anchored in the archaeology of my story
Help me dig deep to discover the
Sweet sap within the bitter bark

#APoemADay – Day 27 – Sunken Cities

#APoemADay – Day 27 – Sunken Cities

Beneath the water
Cities lay sleeping
For silty centuries
Upon the salty seabed

Drowned deities
Sunk in sycamore
Mysteries encased in
Abandoned barges

Sphinxes curl their tails
Keeping a watery gaze
At the gateways to
Toppled temples

Hippo headed goddesses
And giant bulls preside
Over ocean empty
Stony still streets

Here under the sea
Hieroglyphs swim
With Greek alphabets
Across tablets of stone

Fluid cultural metamorphoses
Generals become pharaohs
Drowned lovers turn gods
And sister queens goddesses

In a titanic outpouring
Of shared inspiration and wisdom
The dreams of two continents
Slipped beneath the waves

Their sleep uninterrupted
Until this modern awakening
Unblinking eyes of seabathed stoneNow gaze upon humanity again

#APoemADay – Day 26 - Angels of Rest

#APoemADay – Day 26 - Angels of Rest

Lattice of spectral shadows
Angel dance of light playing
Between light and shade
In intricate rivulets of stone

Tiny incubating chapel of rest
Hand hammered in minutiae by
Innumerable nameless masons
Whilst sleeping lords in tombed glory lie

Dedicated craftsmanship
Carvings by devoted hands
Meet modern day artistry
In peaceful glass and stone duet

Six illuminated angels
In crystalline spirals
Extend loving hands
Within sculpted cocoons

Inviting us to remember
Those whose essential selves
Still abide within the
Chambers of our hearts

Held there within
The intricate caverns
Of our memories -
By the lines of our love

The people you love become ghosts inside of you and like this you keep them alive – Rob Montgomery

#APoemADay - Day 25 – Blood

#APoemADay - Day 25 – Blood

Shot of red across pavement
Breaking of a body
By a man with a broken mind
Who mistook murder for heroism

A mother lies fallen
Sacrificed to her commitment
To make this world a little more
Welcoming, a little more joined up

And another man has fallen
For the terrible illusion of national identity-
The lies that are only skin deep
And make a monster of a man

And the tabloids continue
To bang their divisive drums
And blare their salacious slogans
To incite fear and rage

They parade their poppies with pride
These emblems of scattered blood
Forgetting that it is the lie of nationalism
That lead millions to their death

She will not have died in vain,
Nor will they – if somehow
Amidst this terrible darkness
The light of peace emerges

For what a world it could be
If we remembered that our
Poppy red blood unites us in

One great river of humanity

#APoemADay – Day 24 – I Forgot

#APoemADay – Day 24 – I Forgot

I forgot
-       I misplaced myself
In the swamp of daily lists
The relentless to-do list
The busyness of the city

In forgetful busyness
            I forgot myself
            And my forgetting me
            Challenges me to remember
To make a daily space to create

For busyness can dampen
            Muddy and eventually
            Drown a creative soul
And here I must gasp for breath

I must cherish the space
For the voice that sings inside me
            And hums with the business
I am really here to do.
