#APoemADay - Day 25 – Blood
Shot of red
across pavement
Breaking of
a body
By a man
with a broken mind
Who mistook
murder for heroism
A mother
lies fallen
Sacrificed to her commitment
To make
this world a little more
Welcoming,
a little more joined up
And another
man has fallen
For the
terrible illusion of national identity-
The lies
that are only skin deep
And make a
monster of a man
And the
tabloids continue
To bang
their divisive drums
And blare
their salacious slogans
To incite
fear and rage
They parade
their poppies with pride
These
emblems of scattered blood
Forgetting
that it is the lie of nationalism
That lead
millions to their death
She will
not have died in vain,
Nor will
they – if somehow
Amidst this
terrible darkness
The light
of peace emerges
For what a
world it could be
If we
remembered that our
Poppy red blood
unites us in
One great
river of humanity
